Ahmedabad: Soon after arriving in India’s Ahmedabad, US President Donald Trump and his wife Melania visited the Sabarmati Ashram to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. As Mahatma Gandhi’s famous hymn ‘Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram’ played in the backdrop, the US first couple sat beside each other, while trying their hands on the Charkha. Sweet enough, right? However, netizens weren’t happy with it as the note made no mention of India’s freedom movement icon, Mahatma Gandhi and only mentioned PM Modi.
Many contrasted Trump to former US President Barack Obama, who on his maiden visit to India hailed Gandhi as “a hero”. In 2010, Obama too had written a note in the visitors’ book after visiting Mani Bhavan, the house of Mahatma Gandhi located in South Mumbai.
In his note, Obama wrote, “I am filled with hope and inspiration as I have the privilege to view this testament to Gandhi’s life. He is a hero not just to India but to the world.”
The stark difference between the two leaders didn’t escape Twitterati’s eyes, who slammed Trump for the omission.
The Sabarmati Ashram was home to Mahatma Gandhi between 1917 and 1930 during India’s freedom struggle.
During today’s visit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, also showed Trump and the US First Lady ‘Hriday Kunj’, a room inside the Ashram where Gandhiji and his wife Kasturba lived.
The PM also presented “Three Wise Monkeys,” a larger version of one belonging to Mahatma Gandhi, as a memento to the US president.
