Two men from India were sentenced to five years and one month in prison and also received 12 strokes of the cane on Friday for robbing and assaulting two women in hotel rooms while on vacation in Singapore. The men, Arokkiyasami Daison (23) and Rajendran Mayilarasan (27), pleaded guilty to causing hurt during a robbery, according to The Straits Times.

How the crime took place

The men arrived in Singapore from India on April 24 for a holiday. Two days later, while walking in Little India, a stranger approached them and offered to connect them with women for sexual services. Arokkiyasami suggested to Rajendran that they rob the women to get money, and Rajendran agreed.

That evening, around 6 pm, they met the first woman in a hotel room. Inside, they tied her hands and legs, slapped her, and stole SGD 2,000 in cash, her jewellery, passport, and bank cards. Later, around 11 pm, they met the second woman at another hotel. They dragged her inside, covered her mouth to stop her from screaming, and stole SGD 800, two mobile phones, and her passport, threatening her not to leave.

The second victim told another man what had happened the next day, which led to the police being called and the arrest of both the men.

Pleading for Leniency

During the court hearing, both men spoke for themselves, asking for a lighter sentence. Arokkiyasami said his father had died last year, and his family, including three sisters, had no money.

Rajendran said his wife and child were left alone in India and struggling financially.
