Two things – Rapes and Delhi – something which cannot be separated from each other too easily. In yet another shameful incident, a commuter was allegedly raped by a Uber taxi driver in Delhi on Friday night. According to the NDTV reports, the victim is a 27-year-old women who took the Uber cab from Vasant Kunj area around 9.30 pm. The victim, who works as an finance executive, claimed that after a while she sat in the Uber cab, she fell asleep and only to wake up and find her car parked in a secluded area.

The victim also recalls that when she gained her consciousness, the doors of her car were locked. The driver (rapist) first beat the woman when she shouted her lungs out for help and later raped her. Adding insult to the injury, after the cab driver raped the young woman, he also dropped her at her residence. While dropping the victim at her home near Inder Lok, the cabbie threatened her to not to reveal the details of the rape to anyone, else there will be severe consequences.

The medical reports from a local hospital have confirmed that the girl from Inder Lok has been raped. According to the latest reports, the driver is still absconding and there is no trace of him yet. The authorities at Uber have said that the driver is allegedly not trackable, as he has deleted the app from his smartphone. The reports also suggest that the number which the driver registered with Uber is not under his name.

Uber, which has been one of the most recent entrants in the Indian cab hailing market and has disrupted the industry, calls itself a technology company that acts like a middleman between free cabs and customers. However, it also claims it does thorough background checks of drivers and users can share details of their rides with others so they can be tracked while the trip is on.

BGR India has reached out to Uber for its response to the incident. We have also asked Uber to share details of their driver background checks, considering they failed to even notice that even the phone number wasn’t registered in his name. Also it is shocking that Uber does not fit cars on its service with a GPS tracker and solely relies on the driver’s smartphone to track the car’s location. We will update the article if and when we hear from Uber.

After another shameful incident in the national capital one really wonders: When will the ‘Achche Din’ for women in India arrive?
