It took one year to clean Mumbai’s massive Versova beach also known as one of the city’s dirtiest beaches, and nearly 5.6 million kilograms of garbage was removed. This cause was started by Mumbai based lawyer Afroz Shah, in his endeavour he was joined by thousands of people from the city who helped clean the beach including celebrities. This public participation program was hailed by all people and from all quarters even finding a mention in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s monthly radio programme ‘Mann Ki Baat’. It took 85 weeks to clean one of the dirtiest beaches of the country but thanks to Afroz Shah and thousands of city dwellers who lent their hand the Versova beach is a sight to behold now. Now the residents have done a makeover for the beach planting around 300 coconut trees around the weekend. Afroz Shah had shared the new face of the Versova beach on his Twitter account last month and the photos had gone viral and reaped applause from all quarters. Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded the efforts of the volunteers during the 32nd edition of ‘Mann Ki Baat’. He said, “I feel proud to make a mention of something…a man can start a massive people’s movement. Recently you must have heard about Versova Beach, once considered very dirty, it has now become clean and beautiful. This has not happened overnight, locals have toiled for over 80 weeks. On the occasion of World Environment Day on June 5, Afroz Shah along with 500 volunteers of the Versova Residents Volunteers (VRV) planted nearly 300 coconut trees in order to maintain the cleanliness that has been achieved.
