Body shaming is an unfortunate reality that exists all over the world. No matter how advanced or not-so-advanced a country is, women are often subjected to distasteful remarks on their physical attributes. The pressure to ‘look good’ often overtakes the need to ‘feel good’ and ‘do good’. This pressure to look good amplifies even more on dating apps, where “good looks” are often the criteria on which people are judged. Women are almost made to feel that being overweight is a crime. Now poet Gloria B has delivered a fitting response to people who body shame others through her poem titled Damn Girl. With her sharp words, Gloria describes numerous instances when she has been body shamed on the dating app Tinder and how she responds to these remarks. “Everyone thinks I must be plagued with self-loathing and shame / And meanwhile, I’m sitting over here wondering / When the f*ck’s everyone going to realise how hot I am?” says Gloria in her poem Damn Girl. She adds that although such name-calling affected her as a child, she is now well-equipped with a response: “I make the earth move when I walk, because that’s what a goddess does when she takes corporeal form.” Gloria also adds that people should stop telling her she has a “pretty face” as if that is the only part of her that is worth noticing. Her bold lines and confidence coupled with her characteristic style garnered a loud cheer from the audience and an even bigger applause from the netizens, as the video has been shared and liked widely. The reason this video has been appreciated by many is that it resonates with most women. One of the most recent examples of this is in the Bigg Boss 11 house, where Priyank Sharma called Arshi Khan and Shilpa Shinde a ‘drum’ and said they will not be able to do captaincy tasks because they have put on so much weight. Priyank eventually apologised after he was pulled up by host Salman Khan in the weekend episode.
