Brazil Storm Knocks Down Statue Of Liberty Replica: A video of a 24-meter replica of the Statue of Liberty has gone viral on the internet like wildfire. The replica, which was installed outside Havan’s megastore in Guaíba, Rio Grande do Sul, was knocked down by a dramatic storm that battered southern Brazil on December 15. The replica of the Statue of Liberty was installed outside Havan’s megastore in 2020 with engineering certification. In the video, the structure can be seen slowly leaning forward before crashing into the empty parking lot after 90 kmph winds hit it. However, the 11-meter base of the structure held firm. Onlookers quickly moved their vehicles, preventing damage or injuries.

Guaíba Mayor Confirmed The Collapse

Guaíba Mayor Marcelo Maranata took to social media platforms and said that the 90 kmph winds knocked out the statue, informing that no one was hurt. He also hailed the Havan staff that promptly helped the people.

“The area was immediately isolated by the company, following all safety protocols,” Havan said in a statement.
The authorities have started the debris removal work hours after the incident. The store was opened after some time. Retailer clarified that the replica statue met technical standards and an internal probe has been initiated.

Storm Warnings And Regional Impact

Defesa Civil issued cell broadcast alerts interrupting phones—even on silent—to warn of storms, strong winds over 90 km/h, and risks like falling structures, urging people to avoid open areas and monitor trees or signs. The low-pressure system hit Rio Grande do Sul’s metropolitan area mid-afternoon, forming dense clouds and isolated gales after extreme heat met a cold front. Meteorological agencies recorded gusts aligning with forecasts for severe instability.

Not The First Incident

It is to be noted that Havana’s Statue of Liberty replicas are installed at its stores across Brazil. The statues are designed to withstand normal weather under the needed engineering approvals. The Guaíba structure was a very popular landmark since opening five years ago, but extreme winds exposed its vulnerabilities.

In 2021, another statue in Capão da Canoa fell during a cyclone with a wind speed of 70-80 kmph. The fall of the structure caused material damage.

Havan officials started a probe after the collapse to ascertain the cause of the structure’s failure. The company prioritised community safety while keeping the store open.

The video has also sparked an online debate and symbolic jokes.
