Chennai: Heavy showers continued to batter Chennai in Tamil Nadu as Cyclone Michaung is expected to make landfall on Tuesday, further deteriorating the current weather conditions. Due to the intense rainfall, numerous low-lying areas and residential parts have been inundated with knee-high water. Videos circulating on the internet showcases extensively flooded streets and cars being swept away by strong currents. Several areas in Chennai are still submerged in floodwater, leading to severe traffic jams, including on Chennai’s Chrompet GST Road. In north Chennai, Vadakarai Road is also flooded, making it impassable from Madhavaram to Sengunram.
Chennai and its neighboring parts witnessed heavy overnight showers, with Meenambakkam recording 196 mm and Nungambakkam receiving 154.3 mm rainwater in just 24 hours.
Notably, schools, colleges, and government offices in the city and three adjoining districts were remained closed on Monday due to the critical situation. The state government has also requested private companies to allow work from home to their employees.
