Every year, the Waterford Crystal Times Square New Year’s Eve Ball is looked forward to by millions across the globe. On December 31, the Ball begins its descent at 11.59 pm and people gathered at the Times Square jointly give the countdown to the final seconds of the year and celebrate the beginning of a new year that is full of hopes, challenges and dreams. This year is no different, and the crews at One Times Square are busy installing the famed Waterford Crystals on the New Year’s Eve ball.
The theme for the New Year’s Eve ball this year is “The Gift of Serenity”. It is displayed by the butterfly-like design cut out in the Waterford Crystal triangles. Reportedly, once completed, the 12-foot masterpiece weighing nearly 12,000 pounds will be covered with over 2,600 Waterford Crystals of different patterns, cuts and sizes. Tom Brennan from Waterford Crystal said that when that ball drops, there is 32,000 Phillips LED lights behind each crystal panel generating over 7.5 billion light combinations that will be and can be seen from space. Thousands are expected to gather at Times Square crossroads despite the cold weather on the New Year’s Eve.
On the official website of Times Square, a detailed description of this year’s theme is given. It states that the pattern of cuts resembles butterflies flying peacefully above a meadow, capturing the spirit of serenity. The ball will be able to display a palette of over 16 million vibrant colours and billions of patterns that create a spectacular kaleidoscope effect at One Times Square.

The first time that the ball was dropped at Times Square was in 1907. At that time, the 700-pound ball was made of iron, wood and covered with 100 light bulbs. It clearly has come a long way since then. Over the years, several changes were seen in the ball. These changes included upgrading it to another iron ball in 1920, aluminium ball in 1955, a computerized aluminium and rhinestone ball in 1995, a crystal ball in 1999, a LED ball to celebrate the centennial in 2007 — and finally, was replaced with the current ball.
