WhatsApp has been our go to messaging app, mainly for its ease, credibility and privacy settings. With encryption codes and a server base that deletes messages within 30 seconds of its delivery, WhatsApp appreciates privacy and has proved to be a trusted source to millions of people all over the world. However Facebook recently has a few posts where in screenshots show how WhatsApp accounts of a few people has been hacked. The hacker is seen asking friends for money to be transferred into their Paytm account. ALSO READ: IIT-Madras websites hacked, Posted ProPakistan Message.

The messages started doing the rounds on Facebook last night and scared many who vouched by the safety and security of the messaging app. The screenshots shared has a similar tone as the person asked for small amounts like Rs. 2000 and Rs. 2500 to be transferred to their Paytm id. However, it is known that Paytm Ids can be tracked and if the hacker did actually get the money, he/ she would be caught in the act. However the fact that someone could send messages to their contact list was alarming.

While this is threatening, a hacker friend revealed that hacking WhatsApp is not an easy affair. The App, which comes with an encryption code to increase the secrecy of the message sent, has an extra protection in android phones with OS 5 (Lollipop) or higher. The operating system makes it a point to ask for permission before giving access to a third party host. A hacker essentially accesses the apps through third party and will require the person to provide permission. However this security service is not available in android phones with older android versions.
Hacking in India has increased exponentially in the recent times. Ever since demonetisation gave a push for digital payment, the vicious side of hacking has seen a boost, making us question whether our country is ready to go cashless and if we have a strong security system in place. This incident happened with many journalists in India, and it would be wise to double check our security settings.
