When did the beautiful Indian saree go from Wow to Bleh?

It's the garment that is always 'in'!

“Sarees are for aunties”. When did the thought process suddenly change? Indian women have rocked the saree since times immemorial and the humble saree has been her go-to for every and any occassion. Right from the most comfortable day-wear to a snazzy, glitzy party-look, the saree can be worn anywhere and anytime. In fact, for generations, imagining our moms and grandmoms without a saree is just impossible! They lived in sarees and absolutely and comfortably carried out all their daily chores in them. Generations have worn the saree without and much fuss or ado about the garment. It is after all the Indian woman’s style statement and a part of our culture.

However, with the changing times and western influences, Indian women’s dressing sense has also evolved. Say evening or party and it is immediately the evening dress or one-piece that comes to mind. Similary, say formals and an image of a shirt with trousers comes to mind. The saree has been strangely relegated to the “traditional” wear. To be unwrapped and draped during Diwali or those office functions which call for celebrations the Indian way. It is rarely ever sported on a daily basis. The saree has suddenly become cumbersome and difficult to wear.

But in reality, it is not. A saree is a garment that can be worn anytime, anywhere. Pin it up suring office hours and let the pallu loose for the evening look. It is a garment that suits all body types and shapes – tall, short, thin, fat… You can even let your creativity shine forth in the way you drape or the blouse designs! There’s only a million ways to rock a saree and it can just never get boring.
