Anurag Bajpayee, an Indian-origin entrepreneur and the CEO of the clean water technology company Gradiant, has been arrested in the United States in connection with a high-profile prostitution investigation. According to a report by the New York Post, Bajpayee is among several individuals accused of paying large sums up to USD 600 (approx over Rs. 51,000) an hour for sexual encounters at high-end apartments in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and other locations.
Court documents mention that the clientele in this case included prominent figures such as doctors, lawyers, officials, and government contractors. Many of the women involved were reportedly of Asian descent.
The brothel network was busted in November 2023. “This commercial sex ring was built on secrecy and exclusivity, catering to wealthy and well-connected clientele,” former US Attorney for Massachusetts Joshua Levy said at the time.
Bajpayee was among those arrested during a sting operation conducted in the Boston area earlier in 2025. He faces misdemeanour charges, alongside several other local CEOs whose names have appeared in recently unsealed court documents.
In the wake of the arrest, there have been internal concerns at Gradiant, with some voices reportedly calling for Bajpayee to step down. However, the company released an official statement standing by its CEO. It said, “We have faith in the legal process and are hopeful for a positive outcome. Regardless of this personal matter, Gradiant remains committed to its mission of delivering clean water solutions through innovation and technology.”
Anurag Bajpayee, who holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), had previously worked in research positions at both MIT and the University of Missouri before co-founding Gradiant.
