Why do plastic chairs have a hole at the back? The answer is smarter than you think

Ever spotted that tiny hole in the back of a plastic chair and thought it was just for style? In reality, it serves a lot more than just looks. That little detail has some clever, practical purposes that make the chair stronger, easier to use, and even cheaper to produce.

Have you noticed that small hole on the back of a plastic chair and thought they have no reason for being? You’d be surprised; there are actually a couple of good reasons that the hole is there. When plastic chairs stack, they create an air pocket between chairs that result in what we call “suction” between the chairs making it very difficult to pull the chairs apart. The hole allows the air to escape, so the chairs do not “stick” together and can be easily pulled apart.

The hole serves a second practical purpose, which has to do with manufacture. The process of making chairs involves having to pour hot plastic into the moulds. The hole allows a chair to come out of the box more easily, and still can allow for the chairs to possibly break if there is still a bit of plastic stuck to the mould. Overall, that little hole is part of the design that allows manufactured chairs to be practical, accessible, and have a potentially longer life.

The small hole in a plastic chair also helps make the chair lighter and uses less plastic, which lowers production costs. While the saving may seem small for one chair, it becomes significant when millions of chairs are made.

The hole also improves ventilation for the person sitting, keeping them cooler and more comfortable during long periods. If water is spilled on the chair, it doesn’t pool, the hole lets it drain away easily.

Even from an aesthetic standpoint, the hole prevents the chair from looking bulky or heavy. It creates a sense of openness in the design, giving a lighter, more minimal appearance that fits a variety of settings.
