World Blood Donor Day 2018: Tweeple Pledge to Donate & Save a Life; Thank Donors For Their Life-saving Gifts of Blood

Today, June 14 marks World Blood Donor Day, initiated by the World Health Organisation, the Red Crescent Societies and the International Federation of Red Cross. The day is celebrated to thank blood donors across the world and to raise awareness about the requirement of safe blood and blood products. World Blood Donor Day promotes the unpaid and voluntary donation of blood, which is a life-saving gift to the person in need.

World Blood Donor Day, established in 2004, is celebrated every year on the day of birthday anniversary of Karl Landsteiner, the person who classified the main blood groups. Every year, the campaign focuses on one main issue and this year the theme is to promote donation as an act of solidarity. It highlights fundamental human values of respect, empathy, altruism, and kindness. For World Blood Donor Day 2018, the slogan is, “Be there for someone else. Give blood. Share life”

On this day, awareness campaigns are held in order to highlight stories of people whose lives have been saved through blood donation. The social media is lit up with netizens taking up to Twitter to thank volunteers, unpaid blood donors for their life-saving gift of blood donation.
