World Cancer Day is marked on February 4 to raise awareness about cancer, its prevention, detection, and treatment. It also aims at reducing misconceptions of the illness thus making people more educated about it. The primary goal of World Cancer Day is to reduce the illness and related death by 2020. World Cancer Day was founded by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) to support the goals mentioned in the World Cancer Declaration, 2008. Various programs and events are held across the world to not only raise awareness of cancer but also reduce stigma around it and deal with misinformation. Meanwhile, on World Cancer Day, Twitterati is raising awareness about prevention and early detection of cancer.

One of the global initiatives to help and give courage to those fighting cancer is #NoHairSelfie.  It encourages ‘harticipants’ to shave their heads as a symbol of support to those undergoing cancer treatment. Supporters can either physically shave their heads or virtually showcase shaven heads on social media. The pictures are shared on social networking sites with #NoHairSelfie.  #WorldCancerDay is a global trend on Twitter and here are some of the tweets:

Worldcancerday.org conducts various events to create awareness among general people and help those affected to fight the illness. Their theme or tagline for World Cancer Day 2016-2018 is ‘We can.I can’. Their website reads, “World Cancer Day 2016-2018 will explore how everyone – as a collective or as individuals – can do their part to reduce the global burden of cancer.” It also says, “World Cancer Day is a chance to reflect on what you can do, make a pledge and take action. Whatever you choose to do ‘We can. I can.’ make a difference to the fight against cancer.”
