Does sex come to your mind when you hear the word ‘Chess’? But the World Chess Championship’s recent logo portrays a sex position and social media is still figuring out its meaning. The logo has garnered quite some eyeballs and has received a lot of criticisms on social media. The Chess world seems outraged with many chess players commenting on its dire effects on young chess players. The new 2018 World Chess Championship logo shows two human figures intertwined holding a chess board in hand. The depiction has been termed as “borderline pawnographic” by many internet users. But some have termed it “Tantric Chess” straight from the “Kamasutra”.
Their website explains the logo of World Chess, the commercial arm of the World Chess Federation as, “Key visual for the 2018 World Chess Championship is controversial and trendy, just like the host city. Who knew both chess and London were so sexy???” American poet Heather Christle had a tongue in cheek reply thanking the artists for the logo. The logo also garnered attention on leading chess players in the world.

More than 50% of the world chess playing population are kids. They are also the biggest purchasing block by a HUGE margin, many times more than adults. Do you think that logo can be marketable in schools?

Australian grandmaster David Smerdon tweeted saying, “No, this is not a joke.” Susan Polgar, the first woman to earn the grandmaster title, also took to Twitter saying that the image may be inappropriate for a younger audience. The other logo has four hands moving the wooden warriors on a chess board. The image shows two hands move the pawns while one holds the Queen and the other the King. The 2018 World Chess Championship will be held in London. The Magnus Carlsen will face the winner of the Candidates tournament, which will be in Germany in March.
