World Disability Day is being celebrated today on December 3, 2017. The annual observance of International Day of Disabled Persons was first proclaimed in 1992. The United Nations General Assembly resolution 47/3 brought this observance into being. The observance of the day aims at bridging the gap in the society and brings an understanding of disability issues and brings dignity, rights, and well-being of persons with disabilities. It aims to bring the disabled people at the forefront in the society and get them included in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life. The World Disability Day is being celebrated the world over and Twitter users are sharing heartwarming, motivating and inspiring tweets on the issue for they are maintaining that today is the day to celebrate the specially abled. Often we either marginalize people with disability or pity them; both the scenarios do nothing for the disabled person. We need to motivate, inspire and empower them so that they can fulfill their potential and become a major part of the society. Government schemes and policies often try to empower people with disability but we as responsible and compassionate citizens should work towards getting them integrated in society.
