China, which shocked the world last year by introducing its ultra-high-speed (UHS) maglev transportation system, capable of reaching speeds of over 1,000 km per hour, has now unveiled the ‘world’s fastest train’, the CR450 prototype, which can reach speeds of up to 450 km/h (about 280 mph).
According to reports in Chinese state media, the CR450 builds on the design principles of its predecessor, the CR400 series, but introduces several improvements that boosts the latest variant’s performance. The CR450 features an enhanced aerodynamic design that helps reduce air resistance, allowing the train to reach higher speeds.
The CR450 is reportedly built from lightweight materials such as carbon fiber and aluminum, making it roughly 10% lighter than earlier models. The reduced weight allows the train to travel faster and makes it more energy-efficient, according to reports. The improved design and upgraded traction systems also provide a major efficiency boost, making it 20 percent more energy-efficient than its predecessors.
The CR450 also sets in a new benchmark in passenger comfort and experience, offering four classes of accommodation to travelers — Business Class, Premium First Class, First Class, and Second Class.

As per reports, the CR450 prototype, which had its first demo run in Beijing on November 26, 2024, is currently undergoing tests to meet safety and performance standards, and will be soon ready for a commercial launch.
Notably, China has launched an ambitious plan to expand high-speed rail network across the country, and aims to increase the total length of its high-speed rail lines from 48,000 kilometers to 60,000 kilometers by 2030.
