World’s most dangerous place: There are dozens, if not hundreds of dangerous locations around the world, but perhaps none more so than the magical Thridrangaviti lighthouse, located off the coast of Iceland atop a gigantic rock in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.

Why Thridrangaviti lighthouse is considered world’s most dangerous place?

Well, for one thing, there is no path to reach the Thridrangaviti lighthouse, the only option for thrill-seekers who wish to reach this remarkable place is to scale the gargantuan rock or book a helicopter ride. The lighthouse rests about 40 meters (130 feet) above sea level, and a single misstep could prove fatal and result in instant death because of the sharp-edged rocks below.

Who built the lighthouse?

According to various reports, the Thridrangaviti lighthouse, also known as the Thridarangar lighthouse, was constructed by a group of skilled mountaineers between 1938 and 1939, who scaled the towering sea stacks to build this marvel. This was prior to the invention of the helicopter, so the only way to reach the top was to climb the giant rock.

The veteran mountaineers transported the building material all the way to the peak, and this laborious task took nearly a year too complete.

The Thridrangaviti lighthouse is located atop the Thridarangar sea stacks, 4.5 miles (about 7.2 km) off the southwest coast of Iceland, and the place is so named as it translates to  “Three Rocks Lighthouse”, a reference to the sea stack in the area.

How to reach the Thridarangar lighthouse?

The only means to reach the Thridarangar lighthouse is to either climb your way up the rock or take a helicopter ride to the helipad built atop the peak in 1950. The place cannot be reached by foot or by boat as there is no path carved to the top of the peak.

It is often dubbed as the world’s most isolated lighthouse because of the limited accessibility options.

The structure sports a red roof covering a white concrete hut, and was upgraded into a solar-powered lighthouse in 1990.
