Kolkata Rape and Murder Case: Amid the row over “sudden” renovation work at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, the father of the 32-year-old trainee doctor who was brutally raped and killed at the institution last week, said he suspects that his daughter was not killed in the hospital’s seminar hall.

Talking to reporters on Saturday, the victim’s father said there are indications that his daughter was murdered in some other room and her body was later brought to the seminar hall at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

“We found lapses by the Kolkata police and informed the same to the CBI. Now, we doubt whether she as killed in the seminar hall. Maybe she was killed somewhere else and her body brought there later,” he said.

The aggrieved father, while demanding the harshest punishment for those who raped and murdered his daughter, said he has faith in the CBI and its investigation, and also demanded action against the hospital department where the gruesome crime took place.

‘Lost one daughter, gained millions’

He also thanked the millions of men and women who have hit the streets in protest to demand justice for the slain doctor.

“I lost one daughter but gained millions as hundreds of thousands of my sons and daughters have hit the streets to demand justice for her. From Bangladesh to Bengal, this movement has spread to the entire world,” he said.

His remarks come amidst the backdrop of allegations questioning the renovation work carried out near the third-floor seminar hall of the chest department of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Many have alleged that the renovation in the emergency building of the hospital was carried out to destroy evidence.

The Calcutta High Court on Friday questioned the West Bengal government’s “urgency” for ordering renovation near the scene of the crime. However, the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC dispensation refuted the allegations, stating that the renovation work to build a restroom for doctors.

Parents suspect involvement of interns, doctors

The victim’s parents told the CBI that they suspect several interns and doctors at the hospital might be involved in their daughter’s rape and murder.

“The parents told us that they suspect the involvement of multiple persons behind the murder of their daughter. They have given names of a few interns and doctors who worked with her at the hospital,” news agency PTI quoted a CBI officer as saying.

RG Kar campus attack

On Wednesday night, during the massive ‘Reclaim the Night’ protest by women across West Bengal against last week’s brutal rape and killing of the trainee doctor, a raging mob stormed the RG Kar hospital campus and vandalised the site of the protest, attacking vehicles and public property.

Visuals of the incident shared on social media showed the mob ransacking the hospital where the trainee doctor was raped and murdered last week. Some police vehicles also came under attack from the mob during the rampage, the videos showed.

As per the police, around 40-50 people masquerading as protesters stormed the RG Kar hospital campus and vandalised the premises, including the emergency ward. The police, who also came under attack, responded with tear smoke shells and baton charge to disperse the vandals, they said.

“The mob vandalised the emergency department, the nursing station, and medicine store, while also damaging CCTV cameras and ransacking a stage where junior doctors had been demonstrating since August 9,” the police added.
