New Delhi: Amid ongoing nationwide protests against the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, the mother of Nirbhaya, the victim of the 2012 Delhi gang rape case, has demanded the resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, alleging that she had “failed” to handle the situation in the state. “Instead of using her power to act against the culprits, the Chief Minister is trying to divert people’s attention by holding protests,” Nirbhaya’s mother Asha Devi said on Saturday.
“Mamata Banerjee is protesting to divert people’s attention from this issue. She herself is a woman. She should have taken strict action against the culprits while discharging her responsibility as the head of the state. She should resign because she has failed to handle the situation,” Asha Devi said.

Asha Devi stated that this is high time that central and state governments get serious over stringent punishment for rapists from the court, otherwise such brutality will continue to take place in the country.
On August 9, a distressing incident occurred at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata; a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor was brutally raped and murdered in the hospital. Her colleagues from the college and medical practitioners from all over India have since united, raising their voices in protest, firm in their demand for justice for the young doctor.
Notably, CM Banerjee put together a protest march that moved from Moulali to Dorina Crossing in Kolkata on Friday demanding justice for a woman doctor. With a stern call to action, she demanded the harshest punishment for the offenders – the death penalty.
A day after the trainee doctor was brutally raped and murdered in R G Kar Medical College and Hospital, law enforcement in West Bengal succeeded in nabbing a suspect linked with the shocking incident. However, when inconsistencies were highlighted in the local police’s investigation, the Calcutta High Court made the call to involve the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to ensure a thorough probe into the matter.
